I've been a subscriber to for a couple months now, and I'm really enjoying this monthly yarn box concept. The box I get every month is the Knit & Crochet Club, which includes:
One (or more, and usually it's more) skeins of high-quality yarns. So far I got some merino, alpaca, silk, cotton, tencel and other mixes that make me discover new fibers and textures.
Two exclusive Knitcrate patterns (one for knitters and one for crocheters).
One surprise!
Discounts to get even more yarn (yeah, they know our flaws 🤷♀️).
Knitcrate has given me a special code for my readers. When entering code MAILLOUX at checkout, you'll get your first monthly crate for free.
September's crate contents and yarn
Each month's yarns are exclusive to Knitcrate and that means subscribers are the first to get these skeins, and they might be the only ones. Once the yarn is sold, it's never coming back! That being said, there's often some skeins left to buy on Knitcrate's website, which is why this post is relevant even if you didn't get your September crate.
September's theme was Western Sun, and the yarn it contained is called Audine Wools Mellow. I received the High and Dry color, which is an interesting gray-brown color with undertones of green, that really shifts depending on the lighting. A beautiful color to fit with last month's theme. The fiber is, as always, a beautiful mix of natural fibers: 80% alpaca and 20% tencel, which I never had the chance to work with but turns out to be very similar to silk and is said to be stronger than cotton.
Patterns to work with two skeins of Mellow yarn
Knitcrate exclusives: 1 crochet and 1 knitting pattern
Every month you get access to both patterns created exclusively for the box.
Not a subscriber yet? You can still buy the patterns individually if you like them.
The Maunder Mitts by Emily O'Brien really use this yarn's properties at its best: it's a warm, soft, and perfect for outside weather yarn.

Annie's Shoulder Bag by Knitting with Chopsticks is a cute purse / bag which is super pretty for this 2-ply bulky weight yarn and uses fringes 😍 which is great considering the Western Sun theme!
Skill: crochet
Level: beginner
Price: $5 USD (included in crate)
👉 While these two patterns are absolutely lovely, I thought I'd share some more suggestions for patterns using the Mellow yarn, just for fun and to show you some of the opportunities that 250 yards of alpaca/tencel bulky-weight yarn can offer!
If you're more of a hand mitten type of person than a fingerless mitten type, these really remind me of Emily O'Brien's above-mentioned style. The alpaca would keep your hands warm in the colder days and the tencel would alleviate the risk for holes.
⚠️ Make sure you gauge appropriately for sizing as Mellow is a bit bulkier than the suggested yarn for this pattern.

I am loving the look of this with the felt coat 👌 The plying of Mellow would look beautiful in a ribbed pattern in my opinion, so that's definitely one of my favourite suggestions.

3- Lil Shepherd vest for kids by Julie Partie
You won't have enough yardage with 2 skeins to make this little vest for yourself, but you could make one for up to size 2 years. A garter stitch accessory perfect for any beginner knitter that will definitely keep the precious little ones warm!

4- Bobble Crown Beanie by North River Knits
There's something is this hat which screams rustic and bonfire to me, just as Mellow does. Available only in adult size.

5- Arika Cowl by Jane Richmond
It's the fringe for me. Imagine wearing this and riding on a horse at sunset. I mean, perfect. 🌅

6- Lucky Charm hat + cowl set by ACCROchet
Two skeins should allow you to make a full hat + cowl set of the Lucky Charm ensemble from ACCROchet. I am liking the idea of a more lacey stitch for Mellow.

7- The Flashdance Basic Reversible Legwarmer by Nadine Taylor
Leg warmers in Mellow? Teleport me to winter, please. This is a simple pattern, yet a classic.
